(Courtesy of Wildstar) WORLD BUILDER'S HANDBOOK/ BOOK 6: SCOUTS Some of us are just using the WBH to detail worlds, some of us are using a combination of Scouts, Grand census/Survey, and the WBH. To help clarify the differences so people don't get confused. Most of the world-detailing information in Scouts, Grand Census, and Grand Survey was reprinted for MegaT in the WBH. To gain a bit of simplicity and ease-of-use, however, Digest Group traded off some accuracy and (more important for a game) some flexibility. Since we have enough die-hards around here that the little bit of extra button-punching on the calculator isn't much of a bother, here's a few more details we may be using: For calculations requiring the UWP Size code (mass, gravity), try using an extended "UWP size" base on the actual diameter. For example, for a UWP size 5 world, you've determined that the actual diameter is 4782 miles (7651km). For the mass and gravity calculations, instead of "5" use "4.782" or simply "4.8". WBH simplifies the calculation for world base temperature a great deal. The "orbit factor" they give is actually (374.025)/(square root of the world distance to the star in AU). This is useful to know if the planet is in a non-standard orbit, or if you want to change the temperature by adjusting the exact distance of the orbit slightly. The "energy absorption factor" is (1-Albedo). Scouts gave a method for calculating albedo, but in general it's ok to use the WBH values. Just be aware that a more detailed system is available if you want to play around with the temperature a bit. The "Luminosity" given in WBH is _NOT_ the real, astronomical luminosity for those stars, but is the fourth-root of the real luminosity: WBH luminosity = (real luminosity)^0.25 real luminosity= (WBH lum.)^4 Ceytle 2037 X44657A-2 Ag Ni B:F 303 Na K0 V Morgan 2038 E659772-4 B:C x2 111 Na M5 V DK G5 VI Danelag (1136) Hans Rancke Rintarna (1933) - John Bogan Lanixohn (2033) - Dane Johnson *! Highest populations at Lanixohn and Carrill, both around 7 billion. Highest tech at Carrill, at tech-14. Total population of Major worlds is 14.87 billion Per capita tech level is 13.22 (per capita TL is the (sum of TL*population of all worlds)/total pop, I use it to figure the "general tech level" of some group of worlds) At their closest points, the Assembly is 2 parsecs from Imperial space, and 5 parsecs from Solomani space. Brief History (which is all that exists): In 517, rivalries between various worlds in Drexilthar and Ffahlnar subsectors (K and P, respectively) threatened the region with a major interstellar war. The Imperium, with numerous trade intrests in the region, stepped in to encourage a peaceful settelment--backed with the threat of direct action if this settlement were not reached. A series of conferences were held in the neutral ground of the Carrillian Belt. The result of the conferences was to federate into a ngle state for the regulation of trade, economic coordination, and common defense. The Articles of Assembly, signed in 519, established the Carrillian Assembly with the Belt as capitol of the new federation. In recent years, High Justice Daldreem has invoked extraordinary emergency powers and has transformed the Belt, and increasingly, the other worlds of the Assembly, into a police state. As a result, Ildrissar (2326) revolted. Assembly Peacekeepers and Aslan mercenaries have been sent to bring the rebellious colony back into line. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- War stuff: If I remember correctly from the archives, the general situation was that the Solomani sent fleets to attack Daibei on its spinward flank, through Assembly space, expecting the Assembly to let them pass. The Assembly did not. Unable to engage in a stand-up fight with Solomani battle fleets, the Assembly navy instead kept low and thoroughly loused up the Solomani supply lines, as well as making some attacks against smaller fleet elements. Finally, the Solomani decided to end this problem, and made a number of Black War-style attacks against Assembly military, industrial, and population centers. What the Solomani started, the Virus finished. The Assembly ceased to exist. Timeline: >c. -300,000: The Ancients - they were active in this region of space, and > as a consequence left artifacts, droyne, chirper and human populations, > ruined worlds, etc. in the aftermath of their Final War. The Ancients: We already have two minor human race in Reavers' Deep: the Drexiltharans and the ............ While this does not absolutely rule out others, keep in mind that according to Alien Module 6 there are only 46 known and identified human sub-species within explored human space. So another one in Reavers' Deep would definitely be exceeding the quota. >c. -3000: The Vilani and the Saie: The Vilani sent a number of expeditions > into Reavers Deep around this time. They encountered the Saie, who were > TL 7, and one of the most sophisticated cultures the Vilani had > ecountered up til then. Some political skulduggery and treachery by some > Vilani gave the Saie jump technology. When this was discovered the > Vilani govt executed the conspirators, but left the Saie to their own > devices. The Saie created a small, short-lived empire in the coreward > half of Reavers Deep, subjugating a number of other races, before blowing > it all in a civil war. No-one knows who the Saie were, or where their > homeworld was. 1st Empire: Human populations established during the 1st Empire is a possibility, either misjumped Vilani or non-vilani fleeing the influence of the 1st Empire. But keep in mind that while misjumps of up to 36 parsecs are possible, they are not very likely. A 36-parsec misjump occurs in only 1 in 279,936 cases. Furthermore, the first recorded 36-parsec jump took place in -2381 during one of the Interstellar Wars. Nothing is said about other misjumps. But only about 0.2951% of all misjumps are over 20 parsecs (about 1 in 340). Statistically speaking the average misjump is 12.25 parsecs; about 2.78% are only one parsec. And at its height the First Imperium only went a few parsecs into Daibei Sector. Thus the likeliest source of misjumped vilani is actually Ileish across the thumb of the Great Rift, and those would only reach the top half of Reaver's Deep. As for fleeing non- vilani, the likeliest time is early in the Consolidation Wars, from -5400 to about -4500. > c. -2350: Caledon - Colonists from Earth, attempting to escape the Inter- > stellar wars between the Vilani and Solomani, ended up colonising > Caledon in the Caledon subsector. Interstellar: Caledon was settled in the 24th Century PI in the lull War Years between two of the Interstellar Wars. In addition, a map of the Terran Confederation circa -2204 shows more than a dozen Terran settlements in Reaver's Deep. The map is too small to work out the precise star systems involved and Caledon, the one settlement that we do know about, is definitely not marked. > -2204 - -1776: Rule of Man - limited colonisation during this period, largely > independent of the Imperial gov't. Gralyn was colonised during this > period. Rule of Man: 'A Pilot's guide to Drexilthar...' states that other Terrans settled various other planets in this period (also known as the Great Terran Diaspora). One interesting question is why they went that far when there apparently were plenty of suitable places to go closer to Terra. I suggest that a common theme for RoM period settlements in Reavers' Deep is the desire to control immigration (which I find it plausible that the 2nd Empire did not allow member planets to do). For example, I've decided that the first colonists of Danelag were eugenics freaks and wanted to be able to keep out people whose genetic makeup they didn't like. The Plague During the Diaspora non-solomani humans across the empire were ravaged by germs brought by the Solomani. On some worlds these plagues made the Solomani the majority. If you want a Solomani group to establish themselves on a world with a previous population, you can use this. At some point during the Diaspora a Vilani doctor named Duskir created a wide-spectrum vaccine capable of handling these plagues, and after that new colonists would presumably carry this vaccine. But propably this vaccine could only handle _most_ plagues. > -1776 - c. -500: Depths of the Long Night - limited interstellar commerce, but > independent nature of area before collapse of RoM means that Reavers Deep > is in better shape than many other areas. Piracy always a problem. Some > colonisation from existing colonies during this period (sometime by > pirates, sometimes private, sometimes gov't sponsored). Early in the: This is a period of retrenchment and decay. While Long Night some colonization efforts are not impossible, they should be rare. This is the time when Reaver fleets would be largish and hungry. New colonies would be at the same time extremely tempting targets and very vulnerable ones. Aslan ihatei would mainly go away from human space. > -500 - 0: The Reavers - Piracy increases as petty warlords carve out mini- > empires. The Deep gets its reputation as a rough place from this period. > Also first Aslan colonisation and Aslan Border Wars. I disagree with you about the timing of the Reavers. Information in the various books is vague, but I believe I have worked out a reasonable synthesis of facts and surmises. Here it is in the form of library data and a timeline: Here is my suggestion for resolving the various dates and events given for Terra, the Terran Mercantile Community, the Old Earth Union, the Rule of Man and such: ------------------------------------------------------------------ LIBRARY DATA: OLD EARTH UNION: Interstellar government from -1110 to 588 compri- sing Terra and the worlds closest to her: Barnard, Calgary, Dismal, Ember, Fenris, Forlorn, Hades, Heiphaistos, Inferno, Junction, Loki, Midway, Peraspera, Prometheus, Sirius and Ys. Fleet bases were also maintained at Aggida, Markhashi, and Meshan - all within jump-3 of Terra - but these systems were not con- sidered part of the Union proper; Agidda was a balkanized world and thus unable to send representatives to the Union Council and both Markhashi and Meshan had been abandoned during the recession that followed the fall of the Rim Province (qv.) in -1690. The OEU was formed in -1110 out of the Terran Mercantile Community (qv.) as a response to worsening economic conditions. Although experiencing some problems - a short, vicious tradewar with the newly formed Dingir League from -1106 to -1098 put a severe strain on both sides - the Union proved strong enough to defend itself from any serious threat during the rest of the Long Night, and in 588 it was peacefully incorporated into the Imperium. REAVERS: Towards the end of Twilight, some of the less affected states in outlying sectors turned to plundering old Terran Confe- deration worlds that had lost interstellar ship technology. These plunderers were called Reavers and differed from ordinary pirates in preying on whole worlds. This lent their name a special horror that has clung to it down to modern days. Most of the Reavers came from Dark Nebula, Alpha Crucis, Magyar, and of course, Reavers' Deep. Some historians hold that the Reaver era ended in -1118 when a Reaver fleet from the Opljiok Defense League lost two thirds of its ships in an attack on Jarslav. With the Aslans becoming ever stronger the various Reaver states in Magyar and Dark Nebula grew unwilling to risk such losses. On the other hand, the name continued to be applied to inde- pendent warlords who, escaping with loyal fleet elements from the breakup or takeover of a small state with a few working ships, could easily make their way into the Great Unknown and have a good chance of dominating one or several primitive planets. Some of the most notorious Reaver lords like Blackjack Duquesne, Orchid Lu Wu, and Grand Admiral Izanak belong to the period from -1120 to -1000. During the latter half of the Long Night it became usual to label any opponent a Reaver, thereby justifying practically any treatment of that opponent. RIM PROVINCE: Administrative division of the Second Empire compri- sing most of the defunct Terran Confederation. It is, depending on what historian you ask, either one of the first or one of the last parts of the Rule of Man to succumb to the Long Night. It was one of the first areas to loose contact with Hub; in -1854 the second new governor sent out from Hub failed to reach the province's capital, Dingir, and Acting Governor Ayara Twofeathers instituted the custom of Governor-appointed successors, a system that was kept to the end of the provincial government. The lessening flow of commerce between the rim and the core was already rendering taxes more and more meaningless, and 16 years later the province ceased to remit taxes to Hub except on an intermittent basis. For a while Dingir tried to keep up payments in the form of precious metals and gems, but when the third of the treasure fleets carrying these payments failed to return, these too were discontinued. On the other hand, the government at Dingir kept ruling "in the name of the Emperor" for another century and a half, keeping the peace and enforcing Rule of Man regulations. It collapsed finally in -1690, when a huge budget deficit forced the government to decommision two thirds of the already decimated provincial fleets and turn over the rest to various individual planets and the Terran Mercantile Community (qv.). TERRAN MERCANTILE COMMUNITY: Loose trade association formed in -1862 by Terra and her closest ex-colonies that later grew into a corporation. Ostensibly a purely commercial organisation, it was actually a means of circumventing Rule of Man prohibitions against member planets having their own navies. The TMC built a merchant fleet that toed a very fine line between commercial ships and naval vessels. The ships carried enough armament to protect them- selves from pirates and raiders, but not enough to classify them as naval vessels. Their merchant fleet made Terra and her fellow worlds in the TMC a formidable commercial force. When the Rule of Man in the form of the Rim Province (qv.) collapsed in -1690, The Terran Mercantile Community had a space fleet to patrol its systems and to replace the now gone Second Empire fleets. The TMC's merchant fleet cushioned the blow of the Long Night and made it possible for Terra to survive in relative comfort. The TMC took over many of the functions of the Rule of Man (though abandoning the extreme edges of the old Rim Province), but was careful at first not to assume the mantle of government. By avoiding the appearance of ruling it avoided alienating the other planets and driving them into forming their own unions. Relying on the protection of the TMC ships were cheaper than building their own, and the TMC itself took pains not to be percieved as a threat. For several centuries the TMC managed to maintain this deli- cate balance, but the steadily worsening commercial climate even- tually forced them to retrench. Like the Rim Province before it, the TMC found the strain of protecting the furthest worlds too much of a burden. From -1500 on other Rule of Man successor states in Alpha Crucis, Dark Nebula, Magyar and Reavers' Deep routinely raided worlds on the fringe of the TMC sphere (see _Reavers_), but although this was a contributing strain, it was not the primary factor. The Reaver Era ended before the end of the TMC, and Reaver attacks in any case concentrated on fringe worlds that had already been abandoned by the TMC and lost interstellar technology. The primary factors were economic depression and a widespread trend toward isolationism, causing a shift to planetary self-reliance at the expense of interplanetary trade. When the worlds near Easter in -1112 formed the Easter Concord and other worlds began talking of forming their own unions, the TMC decided to cut its losses. In -1110 the corporation formally transformed into the Old Earth Union, abandoning all worlds out- side the Union to their own devices, and becoming a small, tight group instead of a large, loose one. See also: Old Earth Union. --------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: The Rim Province is my invention (well, the name anyway. I'm sure some such sub-division existed). A TIMELINE FOR THE LONG NIGHT: --------------------------------------------------------------- -2204 Hiroshi Estigarribia establishes the Rule of Man. -2177 Estigarribia's son is proclaimed Emperor Hiroshi II. -2170? After consolidating his position Hiroshi II transfers the government from Dingir and Vland to Hub/Ershur. -2170 to -2000 The Great Terran Diaspora and the Plague of Duskir. -2100 to -1849 The RoM fails to settle on a formal method of choosing a emperor. Succession struggles routinely causes massive civil unrest. -1862 Terran Mercantile Community formed. ca. -1850 Solomani Rim cut off from the core of RoM. -1849 to -1776 Succession struggles becomes worse. Up to a dozen indivi- duals may be vying for the throne at any one time. -1776 The treasury on Hub/Ershur refuses to acknowledge a mone- tary issue from the branch treasury at Antares. Generally regarded as the date for the fall of the Rule of Man. -1776 to -1500 The first stages of the Long Night is marked by warfare among the RoM's small successor states, sometimes no more than large-scale piracy. Interstellar trade cease in most areas. Some worlds, not self-sufficient, simply die; many worlds' economies are ruined; most lose the technology to construct starships. -1690 Rim Province government succeeded by Terran Mercantile Community. -1526 The last governmental body claiming to be the Rule of Man (on Sylea/Core) ceases to exist. Interstellar ships can no longer travel (on the average) more than one year (perhaps thirty parsecs) without being attacked. Also the net growth of industrial output throughout the empire is negative; factories are closing faster than new ones can open. -1500 The wars in most of the former Rule of Man are over: most of the old starships has broken down and no one knows how to repair them. Only a few scattered areas have managed to keep jump technology and only on the Rim are any of these pocket states close enough to interact a little. -1500 to -1400 In the Solomani Rim pirates still occasionally plague what little trade remains, but the steady decline of said trade and the well-armed ships of the Terran Mercantile Community makes piracy a bad business and by -1400 it has almost disappeared. -1120 First Aslan Border War begins. Reavers from Dark Nebula and Magyar cease to bother the Solomani Rim. -1112 Easter Concord formed. -1110 Terran Mercantile Community transformed into Old Earth Union. -650 Sylean Federation established. -500 Trade is reestablished in many areas by now. -30 Cleon's Campaign begins. 76 to 120 Pacification Campaigns. 100 The IISS reaches the Solomani Rim. 200 Most of the worlds of the Solomani Rim are trading with themselves. 380 Imperial-Aslan border established. 426 to 588 The various Solomani Rim worlds and governments joins the Imperium without fighting. 426 Easter Concord joins the Imperium. 588 Incorporation of Sol into Imperium. > 0 - 380: Aslan Border Wars - Rise of some of the small states (Principality > of Caledon, Iltharan Empire). Lots of colonisation by all sides during > this period. At the conclusion the Peace of Ftahalr establishes Reavers > Deep as a buffer zone. This ends Imperial and Aslan colonisation, but > not local worlds colonising neighbours. Around -1100: Some Aslan clans are getting powerful enough to be able to spare warships to guard new colonies. Aslan settlement of Reavers' Deep would begin in earnest. -1000 to 380: This period would be characterized by a steadily growing Aslan presence in RD. It is also, however, the time of the Drexiltharan Empire who will be able to keep the Aslans somewhat in check. Propably not on it's own, though. I would like to suggest that we establish a few more mini- empires in this period. One centered on Soloman, for example. [I will be posting something about the Soloman Economic Sphere and the history of Eakoi Subsector shortly.] -56 to 49: This is the time of the Aslan Cultural Purge. New colonisation would be rare - retrenchments not unknown. The 'pure' Aslans will be expending their strength on 'persuading' their errant brothers to get back in the fold which wouldn't leave much over for colonisation ventures. If someone needs to weaken an Aslan clan then this will be a good excuse. On the other hand we could also have a group of "clanless" (due to the purge) Aslan trying to get away from the Hierate to a world where they can be the kind of honorable Aslan that they want to be. Formal colonization by 'pure' (or rather, mainstream) Aslan during this period is probably nil. There could, however, be quite a number of groups fleeing the purge. Ca. 100: Around the year 100 IISS survey ships arrived in the Solomani Rim and presumably also Reaver's Deep. Those worlds that the subsectors are named after must at that time have been rather important in _some_ way (though not necessarily in military might) for the Scouts to choose their names for those subsectors. Those of those planets that are insignificant in 1115 must have suffered some sort of decline since then. After Peace: New colonisation is severely restricted by the of Ftahalr treaty, but there seem to be ways to evade it. > 380 - 990: Colonisation dies down, but there are a number of small wars > and near wars. Ends with outbreak of Solomani Rim War. During that time > some more worlds were colonised in an attempt to escape the fighting. > > 1000 - : Very little new colonisation, and what there is is by groups > independant of the larger empires. ----------------- Going off on a tangent, if you are going to establish any Rule of Man populations on your planets, this library data entry may be helpful: NATIONAL RE-EMERGENCE: Social and political phenomenon seen on scores of solomani-settled planets in the wake of the fall of the Second Imperium. During the 400 years or so that the Rule of Man lasted a goodly number of the thinly settled planets in Delphi, Diaspora, Massila, Old Expanses, and Solomani Rim sectors were colonised from Terra. Emigrants had a tendency to prefer planets where people of their own ethnic and cultural background were already established. Nationalism as such was an ill-favoured con- cept in the days of The Terran Federation and continued to be so under the Rule of Man. Peaceful cultural individualism, however, was not, and different groups usually coexisted without any signi- ficant trouble. But as the Twilight fell and The Long Night grew steadily darker, ethnic and cultural sub-groups on scores of planets dug up old cultural differences and used them as a rallying point to increase the group's sense of identity. These reconstructed cul- tures were usually extremely romantizised, often twisted almost beyond recognition, but all of them focused on a past glorious grandeur and a similar glory to come for the group. Examples are the truebrits of Cymbeline/Solomani Rim, the inheritors of Scandia/ Solomani Rim and the neo-germanics of Ephraim/Diaspora. Often an old forgotten language was reconstructed and made the national language, usually at the expense of the Anglic that had been the universal language of The Terran Confederation and the Second Empire. Many planets were renamed at the same time. Many planets in the Domain of Deneb and beyond it were colo- nized by neo-nationalists. When planets with a strong neo-nationa- list background were reintegrated into The 3rd Imperium there were often groups that preferred emigration to staying under the new regime. Thus Caledonia/Glisten was colonized from Duncan/Alpha Crucis, Ghandi/Lanth from Cathay/Vega, and Olympia/Lunion from Athene/Ultima. Opinions about neo-nationalism are sharply divided. On some planets it led to a greater sense of community, prevented polari- sation of the society and propably to a greater or lesser extent saved the planet from regression or destruction. On others, especially planets with more than one dominant group, it led to balkanization, wars and destruction.
